UI design of the Solar Calculator for Vive Energía

DESCRIPTION

Vive Energía is a startup that sought to position itself in the renewable energy market. As part of their strategy, they commissioned the development of a solar calculator so that users could easily estimate the size of the PV installation required for their needs.

Their technology partner Bettergy had already developed the logic and algorithms, but they were lacking our services in the design of our services in user experience design (UX/UI).

Vive Energía (to whom we had already taken the design of their corporate identity) contacted us to create the screens and flows that would allow users to interact intuitively with the tool.

The challenge was ambitious, as the calculator had to collect multiple data from different types of premises, businesses or homes that wanted to calculate the number of photovoltaic panels that fit on the square surface of their roofs, supported by Google Maps technology. In addition, it was important to transmit in a friendly and didactic way technical concepts about solar energy, renewable energies and to expand the branding experience that we had already given them by focusing on our branding theme: smart cities.

GRAPHICAL INTERFACE PROCESS

We conducted interviews with a variety of profiles to better understand their knowledge and needs. This helped us map the calculator flows and prioritise key information.

We then designed each of the vector illustrations necessary to describe the process of business type and marking the square area of the venue and create a specific window for each user interaction that we then subjected Bettergy together to usability tests. Observing live user interaction allowed us to iterate and improve the experience continuously.

The final design takes a progressive approach. It first collects basic user data in a simple way. Then it adds layers of complexity as the user becomes more comfortable.

We also apply data visualisation principles to graphically explain calculations and make it easier to compare options.

Finally, we add additional AI-based features to further personalise the experience.

RESULTS AND KEY LEARNINGS

After the launch, the results exceeded our expectations.

It stands out that more than 80% of users complete the entire process using the solar calculator, which will later serve to generate enough leads for the sales department to have a database. We also received very positive feedback on the clarity of the information and the design of each of the screens was very easy and intuitive for all types of users.

For Vive Energía it was a success in their positioning strategy. In addition to improving its reputation as a user ally, the tool generates quality leads.

We also saw the importance of progressively moving from the simple to the complex so that no matter how complex the process, we can make the digital experience easy for users.

We will continue to apply these lessons in new projects to continue offering intuitive and effective digital experiences.
